A contractor quoting a central AC installation in Gratiot County is sizing against Michigan's cooling season, not against a weather history that has pushed equipment to its limit. 26 severe weather events were recorded in Gratiot County, Michigan between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather is an event here, not a standing condition, which means the decisions that shape a new system's performance are the ones made during the install: load calculations for the house, refrigerant line routing, and how well the air handler is matched to the outdoor unit. A system that underperforms in this county was almost certainly undersized or poorly commissioned.

Ductwork in a house this old was put in for a different system, and what a contractor finds when they trace it determines more about the installation than the unit being dropped in does. Half the homes in Gratiot County, Michigan were built in 1966 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). That means the ducts running through a typical house here were designed around equipment that predates modern central air, and the routing, sizing, and condition of those runs are what a contractor has to assess before anything else can be priced. The electrical service follows the same logic: what the house already carries may or may not match what a new system draws.

What a Central AC System Includes

Isometric cutaway illustration of a house with a dark shingled roof, showing interior ductwork connected to an indoor air handler and an outdoor condenser unit beside the building.

The outdoor condenser unit sits on a concrete pad beside the house and holds the compressor and condenser coil. Inside, the air handler or furnace-mounted evaporator coil lives in a mechanical room, basement, or utility closet and is the indoor half of the system. These two pieces are what a new central AC installation puts in place.

A thermostat on an interior wall controls the whole system and is replaced or added as part of the work. The refrigerant line set, a pair of insulated copper lines, runs between the indoor and outdoor units and carries the working fluid between them. A condensate drain line also runs from the indoor coil to a floor drain or outside, carrying away the moisture the coil pulls from the air.

The drawing shows how these pieces relate in a typical installation, and a licensed contractor determines exactly what applies to your house.

Severe Weather Events in Gratiot County

Weather in this part of Michigan puts real demands on cooling equipment, and those demands shape what a proper installation has to account for. Sizing, placement, and component choices are all local decisions, and the storm record here is part of that picture.
