Step 1 of 3: Equipment

A contractor quoting central AC installation in Huron County has to size the system for what summers here actually demand, and that starts with understanding what existing equipment has been running against. 94 severe weather events were recorded in Huron County, Michigan between 2015 and 2024. At roughly the midpoint of what counties nationally record, that is a real but not extreme operating environment. Equipment that has worn out here wore out because it was undersized for the house, improperly charged at install, or simply old. A replacement sized and installed correctly by a licensed contractor gives the next system a fair start rather than inheriting the same problems.

Unfinished basement with concrete block walls, exposed wood joists, and insulated and galvanized metal ductwork, with two cardboard boxes and a coil of black corrugated pipe on the concrete floor.

Ductwork laid down for a furnace and a handful of registers does not automatically suit a central AC system drawing on it decades later. Half the homes in Huron County, Michigan were built in 1967 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). That span between when a house was framed and what a contractor is now being asked to run through it is where central AC installations get complicated. A contractor sizing new equipment here has to assess whether the existing trunk lines and branch runs will move enough air, and whether the electrical service will carry the load, before the equipment choice means anything.

What Gets Installed With a New Central AC

Isometric line illustration of a cutaway house showing interior rooms with furniture and ceiling ductwork, connected to an outdoor condenser unit with a fan beside the building.

The outdoor condenser unit sits outside the house, usually on a concrete pad beside the foundation, and holds the compressor and condenser coil. Inside, the air handler or furnace-mounted evaporator coil lives in a utility space, basement, or closet and is the indoor half of the system. Together these two units are what a Central AC installation puts in place.

The refrigerant line set runs between the two units, connecting them through a small penetration in the wall or rim joist. A thermostat goes on an interior wall where it reads the living space and tells the system when to run. The condensate drain line carries moisture away from the indoor coil to a floor drain or outside.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how each piece fits the conditions in your house.
