A contractor quoting a central AC install in Lake County has to settle what actually drove the old system into the ground before they can size the replacement correctly. 27 severe weather events were recorded in Lake County, Michigan between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather is an event here rather than a standing condition, which means age and installation quality account for most of what goes wrong with equipment in this area. A system that was undersized on day one, or installed without proper airflow, will fail on its own schedule regardless of what the sky does. The duct layout and the building's heat load are what a contractor works out before anything gets ordered.

Ductwork sized and routed for an earlier generation of equipment shapes what a contractor can do when a new central AC system goes in. Half the homes in Lake County, Michigan were built in 1976 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). That gap between when the house was built and what a modern system demands is where an installation quote either holds or expands: a contractor has to open up what is there, check whether the existing runs will carry the new unit's airflow, and determine whether the electrical service will support the load. Houses that predate today's efficiency standards were built around different assumptions, and those assumptions live in the walls.

What a Central AC System Includes

Isometric cutaway illustration of a house showing attic ductwork, an indoor air handler, refrigerant lines running outside, and an outdoor condenser unit on a pad.

The outdoor condenser unit sits outside the house, usually on a concrete pad beside the foundation, and houses the compressor and condenser coil. Inside, the air handler or furnace holds the evaporator coil and the blower that moves conditioned air through the home. These are the two main pieces a homeowner is buying.

A refrigerant line set runs between the outdoor and indoor units, carrying refrigerant between the two coils. The thermostat, mounted on an interior wall, is what the homeowner touches to control the whole system. A condensate drain line runs from the indoor coil to a nearby drain, removing moisture pulled from the air.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly what applies to your house.
