A contractor quoting central AC in Genesee County has to size the system to what the house actually demands, not to a rough regional rule. 109 severe weather events were recorded in Genesee County, Michigan between 2015 and 2024. Severe weather at that rate is part of the operating backdrop, but it does not override the variables that drive a sizing calculation: floor plan, insulation, window exposure, and duct condition. A system that is undersized or poorly sealed fails in any summer. Getting those inputs right before equipment is specified is where the work lives.

Ductwork in a house tells a contractor more about how a central AC installation will go than the equipment selection does. Half the homes in Genesee County, Michigan were built in 1969 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). That means a significant share of the housing here was designed and built before residential central air was common, and the duct runs in those houses were sized and routed for heating, not cooling. A contractor quoting the job has to check what the existing distribution system will actually carry before anything else moves forward. If the ducts are undersized or the layout fights the load, the unit choice follows from that finding.

What a Central AC System Includes

Isometric cutaway illustration of a single-story house showing interior rooms with furniture, attic ductwork connected to an indoor air handler, and an outdoor condenser unit on a pad linked by refrigerant lines.

The outdoor condenser unit sits on a concrete pad outside the house and holds the compressor and condenser coil. Inside, the air handler or furnace-mounted evaporator coil sits where conditioned air enters the duct system. Together these are the two main pieces a contractor brings in and sets in place.

A refrigerant line set runs between the outdoor and indoor units, carrying refrigerant between the two coils. The thermostat mounts on an interior wall and gives the homeowner control over the system. A condensate drain line also connects to the indoor coil to carry away moisture.

The drawing beside this text shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how each piece fits into your home.

Severe Weather Events in Genesee County

Weather puts a measurable load on HVAC equipment, and that load varies by where you live. A system sized and installed for local conditions holds up better and runs more efficiently than one spec'd against a national average.
