A contractor quoting a central AC installation in Oakland County starts with a load calculation that reflects what the equipment will actually face here, not a national average. 210 severe weather events were recorded in Oakland County, Michigan between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather is a standing condition of operating in this county, and a system sized without accounting for it gets pushed past its design point on a regular basis. Compressors, coils, and electrical components all carry more stress when a unit has to recover repeatedly from hard ambient swings. A contractor who ignores that local pattern and sizes from a catalog alone is quoting a system that will underperform before the warranty runs out.

Ductwork sized and routed for older equipment does not automatically carry a modern central AC system, and in Oakland County a contractor has to assess what is already in the walls before anything else on an installation can be priced or planned. Half the homes in Oakland County, Michigan were built in 1975 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). That gap between when these houses were built and what runs in them now shows up most directly in the duct runs and in the electrical service the new unit has to draw from. A panel that was never sized for today's equipment may need attention before the outdoor unit goes in. What the house already contains sets the scope.

What a Central AC System Includes

Isometric line illustration of a cutaway single-story house showing interior rooms, attic ductwork and an air handler, connected by a line to an outdoor condenser unit on a pad.

The outdoor condenser unit sits on a pad outside the house and holds the compressor and condenser coil, which are the mechanical heart of the system. Inside, the air handler or furnace cabinet houses the evaporator coil, which is mounted in the supply plenum above or below the unit depending on how the home is built. Together these two cabinets are what a new installation puts in place.

The refrigerant line set connects the indoor and outdoor units, running through the wall or along the exterior of the house. A dedicated disconnect box mounts near the outdoor unit, and a new thermostat goes on an interior wall where it reads the home's air temperature and signals the system to run.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how each piece fits the configuration of your house.

Severe Weather Events in Oakland County

Outdoor conditions drive how hard HVAC equipment works and how long it lasts. A system sized and installed for local weather patterns holds up better than one spec'd from a general playbook, which is why the weather record for this area belongs on a page about central AC installation.
