Sizing a central AC system for a Leelanau County home is a local question, not a catalog one, but the climate here does not drive that sizing the way it does in counties where severe weather is a standing operating condition. 56 severe weather events were recorded in Leelanau County, Michigan between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, most systems in this county spend the bulk of their service life running against ordinary summer demand, not against repeated weather stress. A contractor installing new equipment here puts the weight of their assessment on the structure of the house, duct layout, and the quality of the install itself, because those are the variables that will determine whether the system performs for years or underperforms from day one.

Unfinished basement with concrete block walls and a bare concrete floor, insulated metal ductwork running beneath exposed wood floor joists, a coiled flexible hose and two cardboard boxes on the floor.

Ductwork laid down for an earlier generation of equipment may not move air the way a current central AC system needs it to. Half the homes in Leelanau County, Michigan were built in 1988 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). That gap between when the ducts went in and what they now have to carry is where a contractor's assessment concentrates before anything else is priced. Electrical service follows the same question: a panel from that era may not match what a new unit draws. The ductwork and the electrical are what the installation turns on, and both get checked before the outdoor unit is even selected.

What Goes Into a Central AC Installation

Isometric line illustration of a cutaway house showing interior rooms, ceiling ductwork, an indoor air handler unit, and an outdoor condenser connected by lines along the exterior wall.

The outdoor condenser unit sits outside the house, usually on a concrete pad at the side or rear, and houses the compressor and condenser coil. Inside, the air handler or furnace-mounted evaporator coil lives in a utility space, basement, or closet, and is the indoor half of the system. Together these two units do the work of moving heat.

The refrigerant line set runs between the two units, typically through a wall or floor, and keeps them connected as one system. The thermostat mounts on an interior wall and is what the homeowner actually touches to set temperatures. A contractor also ties the system into the existing electrical supply at the unit itself.

The drawing shows the general layout of a central AC system, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how each piece fits the conditions in your house.

Severe Weather in Leelanau County

Weather puts real demands on cooling equipment, and those demands are specific to where the equipment runs. A system sized and installed for local conditions holds up differently than one that was not.
